I am impressed by the book and discussions in it. While it can be adjudged to be in the mould of Soshana’s Digital Surveillance2, but in my opinion it is better. There are a few reasons, why I think it is better. Firstly, it doesn’t beat on the false narrative of all AI is bad. It keeps an open mind on data and AI throughout the book. The authoress is trying to find solutions or atleast open the floor for discussions on how it can become better. In this regard, it is also better than Madhumita’s Code Development3 which also tried to profit from the false narrative of AI. While, 2,3 complain and complain, they provide negligible to very less options for a solution. Secondly, I find the solutions provide by Hilke are more practical, and aligned with my way of thinking. Use a bottom-up approach with a push for open-source tech, and worker’s rights or rights for individuals to understand how they were assessed by the algorithm. This is really the idea which will provide a better world in combination with AI for everyone. I liked the structure of the book, in particular the ending. While 2, is all about extreme measures like using hoodies, and face changing masks, etc., that will keep an average Joe hesitant to use them, but understanding their legal rights - particularly in Europe -, will allow people to actively pursue it. The writing style is easy, and more relevant. The stories of the individual complainants are closed in the books. Isolated incidents are discussed in detail, while it does not use any anonymous sources. Above all, the book also presents how the individuals who fought back. This is important because it provides others with a basic level on which they can build up their own fightback. So, its brilliant in these aspects. I really enjoyed the book, and also I appreciate how I should just read on the weekends, when I am less concerned/distracted from the markets, and can enjoy the book in good spirits and focus. This is nice to to, and should be done from here on. Maybe, go to the park next weekend and read it there itself.
